Home Security Techniques and Gadgets That Work Even When There’s No Power

A home security system is supposed to protect you from a worst-case scenario, but there’s one fatal flaw with that premise: if you lose power, your home security system is useless. Even your backup generator is going to run out of juice eventually, and those batteries in your home security alarms are going to die. When that happens, you’ll be glad you’ve got alternatives.

Here are some home security techniques and equipment that will help protect your home even when there’s no power:

Saving money by buying wholesale (and maybe even make a profit)

Establishing ourselves as a business has saved us quite a bit of money on our preparedness supplies and opened the door to other opportunities.

We first started buying wholesale when our sons became active in paintball and motocross. The cost of those two sports had started to add up substantially. Our solution was to turn each activity into a legitimate business to take advantage of the lower prices that some manufacturers offer to dealers. Here’s a few things that we’ve done in the past. Some worked out well and some didn’t.

Food News 3/3/12

The fear mongers are still predicting a US food shortage in 2012. I must be blind because don’t see any signs of an impending famine anywhere other than in parts of Africa and North Korea. It looks like a typical year, harvests for some grains are good while other grains are down. We’ve contacted one of the main “rumor-spreaders” and asked them to provide some links to where they’re getting their information but they have ignored our requests.

Tips for Buying and Selling on Ebay

Selling off unused stuff is one of the fastest ways to get cash for preps. Ebay can be a great venue for selling as well as buying the things you need. We’ve been active on ebay since 1999 and overall, I think Ebay has become a better place to buy and sell. Amazon ranks a close second for buying but selling things there can be expensive and complicated. In past years, Ebay had rightfully earned itself a poor reputation but I can see that things have changed for the better.

In 2007- 2008, we made the decision to sell-off the bulk of our redundant and unused prep items. I also decided to sell off some of the specialized tools that I had accumulated during my first career. The economy was in the first stages of crisis and we felt that the big sell-off needed to happen ASAP while people were still in a buying mood. That turned out to be a good decision since I have definitely noticed a change in Ebay buying habits since then. Here’s some tips that may be of some help to you. The basics are first, so if you’re already familiar with ebay you might want to skip down further in the post.

Preparing for tornado season

It’s once again that time of year when the tornado activity is most prevalent. Here’s a reminder and to have your basic preps in order. We’ve come up with a basic preparedness checklist below.

Tornados are the most common disaster in our area. We fall under tornado warnings most often between March and May but have had tornado conditions well into December. Even though we’ve never been directly in the path of one, we’ve been hit with damaging winds and hail as well as long term power outages. The odds of being in the direct path of a tornado are low compared to the odds of being impacted by the associated storms.

Our basic preps are located in the western corner of our basement and under the staircase. These two areas are  likely to be undisturbed should a tornado hit our neighborhood. Having the basic supplies protected like this will increase the odds of us having access to them when the storm is over.

Prioritizing our Preps #11: Communications

This is Part #11 of our Prioritized Preparedness series.

I’ve been around radios for as long as I can remember and have been fortunate enough to have made a career in the industry so adding them to our preparedness plan has been a relatively simple task. Here is our basic plan along with some detailed information at the end of this post.

When our household first began our preparedness efforts, we felt like we were on our own. It was the 80s and there were no other families that we knew to be prepping. Since we didn’t need to communicate with any other groups our comms equipment list was very short: A scanner radio, a shortwave radio and our standard CB radios. Cell phones and the internet were still either too expensive or not in existence.

Building an Earthen Oven

We’ve been planning to build a wood-fired oven for a few years now. I put it on the to-do list every spring but something always distracts me enough to postpone the project. One of the things about this project that always hangs me up is setting the form or mold for the clay walls. The video below shows a much easier way of constructing the oven.

8 Ways to Successfully Fireproof Your Home

Did you know that more than 1.9 million fires are reported in the United States each year? That’s a house fire reported every 90 seconds, give or take, and if we told you the rate of injury or, God forbid, death you might very well close the browser in shock.

Look, it’s no secret that house fires are on the rise and while the causes may vary from horsing around to natural causes to gross negligence, one fact remains – many of these could have been avoided through preventative measures. That’s why I have written this quick little guide featuring 8 ways anyone can successfully fireproof their home.
