Book Review: Maximizing Your Mini Farm

The good folks at Skyhorse Publishing provided us with several books to read and review. Here is our review of “Maximizing Your Mini Farm, Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre” written by Brett L. Markham

Before I get into our thoughts on this book here are the publisher’s comments:

“….a holistic approach to small-area farming that will show you how to produce 85 percent of an average family’s food on just a quarter acre—and earn $10,000 in cash annually while spending less than half the time that an ordinary job would require. Now expanding exponentially on his bestselling Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on ¼ Acre, Brett Markham gives you tips, tricks, and planning advice on how to make the most of your mini farm. New topics include:

  • Soil and Fertility Tools and Techniques
  • Planting Guides and Seeders
  • Easy Trellising
  • Weed Control Techniques
  • Greater Food Self-Sufficiency
  • Making Your Own Country Wines
  • Making Your Own Vinegars
  • Making Cheese at Home
  • Cooking for Self-Sufficiency

Keep your costs down and production high with this complete guide to maximizing your mini farm—whether it’s a rooftop urban garden, a suburban backyard, or a more substantial plot of land. Materials, tools, and techniques are detailed with tables, diagrams, and 200 color illustrations and author photographs.”

Now for our comments:

I LIKE THIS BOOK! It is by far one of the best books that I have read in a long time.

It is absolutely full of excellent information. This book does not cover everything like some books try to do but it does give total instructional advice on a select few subjects with just enough technical detail to explain the “whys” and “what fors”. The gardening information in this book is outstanding and definitely covers enough varieties of veggies (over 20 actually) to provide a well-rounded harvest.

The book covers some simple techniques and tools that can enhance your productivity without breaking your budget. I found the wine and vinegar making chapters to be very interesting.

I give this book the highest possible rating and can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their own self-sufficiency. This author has a series of these Mini-Farming Books. I would consider these to be as important to your prepper library as the Foxfire Series.

The paperback is available directly thru Skyhorse Publishing or the paperback and Kindle versions are available on Amazon:
