Here’s an initial review of the Remington D Series Drop Point Skinning Knife, #18347. We’ve been kind of curious about these knives and the prices have come down considerably since we’ve first seen them.
These knives are mostly advertised as being manufactured in the USA. There are some advertised as being imported. It’s not real clear whether the US made knives are becoming less available or not. It would probably be a good idea to verify the knife’s origin before buying it online.
These knives are available with with a drop point or clip point. This particular knife was provided with a kydex sheath. The D-Series are also available with a leather sheath. We have some comments on the sheath at the end of this post.
The pictures below should take care of most of the description…
Specs:
- Overall Length: 8.375″
- Blade Length: 3.5″
- Blade Style: Full Tang, Drop Point, Skinner type
- Blade Steel: 420HC
- Blade Thickness: .160″
- Scales: Aluminum, held on with machine screws

OUR INITIAL OPINION:
The blade thickness should be noted. It’s about 30 percent thicker than most other manufacturer’s blades in a knife this size. The top and bottom jimping is another nice detail.
I have mixed feelings about the sheath. The kydex sheath that came with this knife is molded for the clip-point version. It’s not a real big deal but it is larger than it needs to be and the drop-point fits kind of loose in it. Retention is adequate but could be better.
The kydex sheath does have one very nice design feature. The belt loop is large enough to fit a patrol belt and has a heavy duty snap closure that lets you put it on without removing your belt. The belt loop is also removable. We will probably use this design on some future custom sheath projects.
This one gets a big thumbs up from everyone here, it’s a nice medium sized knife. It’s a handy size for general use. It’s not a lightweight knife but it’s not so heavy that you know you are carrying it. There were no quality issues with this knife at all….. it was ready to use right out of the box.
You don’t find a US made full tang fixed blade for under $40 very often. The D Series can also be found in Mossy Oak camo finish (at a higher price). Currently, Amazon doesn’t have the drop point in stock but they do have the clip point. The drop-point can be found at the big retailers like Bass Pro.
