DIY: Desiccant Packs

We’re beginning to enter the humid part of the year up here and the temperature swings in late spring really kick things off by making our basement and outbuildings sweat. We’ve been making our own desiccant packs for several years and they have worked very well. This method can save alot of cash, not only in the initial investment but by preventing damage to your gear.

The process is about as easy as it gets. We use the crystal-type cat litter, a stapler and a cheap roll of paper towels.

Make a pouch by folding a paper towel into thirds and staple it shut along the bottom and side.

Fill about half to 2/3rds with the cat litter and staple the top of the pouch closed.  The pouch below is about 3″ x 4″.

We use these in the gun cabinets, toolboxes and all the cans and canisters that have items that could be damaged by long term excessive moisture. The radio gear and dry-cell battery storage cases and bags also get one or two of these.

The kitty litter inside can be re-used by removing it from the pouch and drying it in the oven for a few hours.
