Review: Gerber EVO Jr. Folding Knife

This is the Gerber EVO Jr. folder, Gerber model #22-01492 or 22-41492. It was purchased in 2007 for use in an EDC belt pouch for work and was used daily for almost a year. This knife was used for normal duty encountered in an industrial maintenance capacity: cutting hose, cardboard, plastic, webbing and occasionally deburring machined parts.

SPECS:

  • Blade: 2.75″, Drop Point w/false top edge
  • Blade Thickness: .091″
  • Blade Steel: 440
  • Overall Length: 6.3″
  • Liner Lock
  • Dual Thumb Studs
  • Aluminum Scales with spring steel pocket clip

PROS

  • Quality: Gerber quality has never been an issue with me and this knife is no exception. The knife was sharp when purchased and there have been no problems so far.
Easy to open: The blade can be opened with the thumb studs or you can use your index finger to open this knife with the flipper stud.
Solid lock up: I’m not sure if you can see it in the photo above or not. The lock spring snaps solidly into place and comes to rest right in the middle of the blade. The spring has shown no signs of fatigue.
Finish: The coatings used on the blade and scales has held up well. There are some light marks but nothing deep. The photos above were taken in 2010 so you can see that 3 years of use hasn’t done much damage to the finishes.
Scales and Pocket Clip: Metal scales have become a feature that I insist on. I have a drawer full of folding knives with plastic or rubber scales that are missing their pocket clips. Aluminum or Steel handles hold the pocket clip screws better than rubber or plastic scales do. The EVO’s pocket clip is outstanding. It has retained it’s grip and came out of the box so tight that I needed to bend it slightly so I could get it over the item I was clipping it to.
  • Pivot and Liner: This knife is still solid after seeing daily industrial use. There is little “slop” between the blade and liner at the pivot.

CONS:

  • Blade Steel: I can’t be certain about the steel type since Gerber doesn’t state which steel they use or it’s hardness. I can say that I’ve needed to sharpen this knife more often than others I own. I’m guessing that it is probably 440A because it does take an edge very well.
  • Pocket Clip: This really isn’t an issue for me but if you need to move the pocket clip to another portion of your knife, you won’t be able to do that on this knife. The pocket clip can only be used in the one position. You could easily drill and tap new holes  in another spot.
  • This knife is imported. There are no markings anywhere indicating the country of origin.

This knife is priced at $15-$20. I can recommend this knife without hesitation.  It has outlasted ALL of the CRKT knives that I have used. I’m planning to purchase the full-sized EVO soon.
