Here’s a shaving alternative that may be of some interest to you. It’s a Rolls Razor…. a self-contained shaving razor and sharpening kit. The Rolls kits contain a razor blade and handle plus a sharpening system to keep the blade functional for virtually forever. To save on words, I’ve snapped some photos of one of the Rolls kits that I have. You can see the various pieces in the kit. The handle and blade store securely in the case. Also notice that the covers contain a sharpening stone and a leather strop.
Sharpening the blade is extremely easy and foolproof. It’s accomplished by repeatedly passing the razor over the stone and/or the strop while holding the blade in a sliding fixture located in the sides of the case.
I’m not sure of the Rolls Razor’s exact history but I do know that they came out with this product back in the 1920s and continued production up until the 50s. There were a few variations available but they all were pretty close in functionality.
This razor is a great alternative to using a straight-razor. I find it easier to use but it takes some getting used to. You can still find these for under $25.00 online at some of the auction sites, at least for now. I see them mostly on ebay but be careful of incomplete kits. When buying a Rolls Razor be sure it has the razor handle and an undamaged blade and stone. Most of the complete kits that I have seen for sale do not have the instructions with them. I have scanned copies of the instructions for anyone that may need them. Just email me if you want them.
I shave with this razor every once in awhile. I keep it in my supplies as a space saving alternative to stocking up on disposable razors. The kit is fairly heavy, probably about 2 pounds, so it’s not really something I’d use while camping or traveling.
